[Adam Outler] has been pretty heavy into mobile device hacking lately. The biggest problem with that field is recovering from back flashes or development firmware glitches. In many cases you can use a JTAG programmer to reflash stock firmware to resurrect a handset. Unfortunately you’ll be hard pressed to find a phone that comes with a JTAG header, and soldering to the microelectronic boards is not for the faint of heart.
But a solution is here, [Adam] pulled together a wide set of resources to create a package to unbrick Samsung phones. Now we’re sure that there’s more than a handful of people who would argue that a bad firmware flash that can be fixed this way means that the phone wasn’t actually “bricked” in the first place. But what we see is one more barrier torn down between being a hardware user and becoming a hardware hacker. You’re much more likely to get in there and get your hands dirty if you know that you’ll be able to undo your mistakes and reclaim you precious pocket hardware. See just how easy it is in the video after the break.

Troubleshooting your Samsung Galaxy A5 manually represents a custom and also a complex operation that is extremely important for you and also for your phone. Due to various reasons, your Galaxy A5 might be dealing with different software related issues, issues that will damage the Android system that runs on your smartphone. So, if you are trying to fix these problems, read the guidelines from below; there you will be able to find out how to unbrick your Samsung Galaxy A5 by using some dedicated troubleshoot solutions that can be applied easily and also quickly.
So, the first thing to clarify is that this step by step guide is compatible only with software bricked Samsung Galaxy A5 devices. That means you can use the steps from below for addressing issues that are caused by software problems. Thus, if you manage to hardware brick or damage your phone, we can’t help you – most likely you will have to take your handset back to service for technical assistance (if you can’t reclaim the warranty, then it can get quite expensive).
The best is to use this trouboleshoot tutorial if you can’t use the warranty of your Galaxy A5 – as you know, the warranty can be easily voided if you choose to tweak your Android device (I am talking about custom operations like gaining root access, installing custom recovery images, flashing custom ROMs, overclocking the CPU, removing bloatware and so on). In fact, this guide is perfect as you can manually fix software related problems without taking your Galaxy A5 back to service, so the warranty will no longer be a problem for you.
What kind of issues can you fix by using the guidelines from below? Well, all sorts of issues that are usually caused by unofficial procedures (like the ones mentioned above). Thus, bottom line, you can now troubleshoot issues like boot loops, lags, bugs, force close problems, alerts, errors, battery drain, heating issues, screen freeze and also total blackouts.
As you can see, this step by step guide might become a real life saver. Anyhow, there are several methods to complete, so be prepared to face a complex procedure. But, keep in mind that you will do it everything in an official way – all the steps from below are showing official operations so you won’t lose your phone’s warranty. Moreover, by completing this guide, you will restore your Samsung Galaxy A5 back to its initial state, whether we are talking about stock Android OS, or stock settings. Thus, you really have nothing to worry about.
However, since you will take your handset back to its initial state, the best will be to backup your Galaxy A5 before doing anything else – of course, complete the backup process only if that’s possible. If you skip the backup, then you can lose everything that’s saved on the internal storage memory of your smartphone. So, take your time, use compatible backup and restore software and save your contacts list, call logs, text messages, internet settings, EFS folder, market apps along with any other personal data, info and accounts.
The steps from below can be applied in any conditions: your Galaxy A5 might be rooted, locked, installed with a custom ROM, running on default Android OS, flashed with a custom recovery image or running on default recovery software; this is a general unbrick method that resolves software related issues. However, as you will see, if you choose to downgrade your phone back to stock Android OS, root access will be revoked by default.
How to Unbrick Samsung Galaxy A5
Fix most Common Android Related Issues without Replacing the Android OS
The first thing to do when dealing with software related issues is to make a hard reset operation. Yes, that’s right; by wiping the internal system of your Samsung Galaxy A5 you can easily troubleshoot the most common Android related problems and this without replacing the Android OS that’s currently running on your phone. The hard reset represents a featured that is coming like as a default operation on any Android system. Thus, you won’t need to use a third party app in order to complete this process.
Unfortunately, during the hard reset you will not only remove malicious apps and programs but also your personal data, info and accounts – so don’t forget to make a backup before checking the following steps. Anyway, let’s see how to complete this method:
- Plug in the charged on your phone before doing anything else – the battery power left should be at least 50%.
- Turn off your phone after taking care of the charging process.
- Then, enter recovery mode on your Galaxy A5.
- From recovery complete the hard reset process – select “wipe data factory reset”.
- Optional: in order to make things right, the best will be to clear cache too; thus select “wipe cache partition” and “wipe dalvick cache”.
- When done, return to main menu of recovery and select “reboot system now”.
Downgrade Galaxy A5 back to stock Android OS
If the hard reset process isn’t working for you, then you will have to restore your Samsung Galaxy A5 back to default Android OS. In this way you will remove everything from your device while you will reinstall all factory and default programs and apps. Do note that the backup is still required.
Now, this update process will be a manual operation. Thus, a computer will be required; your A5 and your phone’s USB cable should also be near you. On your phone you need to gain developer rights (go to “menu – settings – about phone – tap several times on built number”) as you then have to check the USB debugging options from “menu – settings – developer options”. Also, on your computer you should temporarily deactivate antivirus and other similar security protection – security tools might interfere with our work.
The downgrade operation can be completed only by using Odin. This is an official program developed and offered by Samsung. Now, Odin works only on Windows based computers and only if on your computer you have the Galaxy A5 USB drivers installed. Thus, before doing anything else, use Samsung KIES and install the required drivers.
Finally, charge your smartphone if the battery power is currently lower than 60% - if your Samsung Galaxy A5 will get turned off while you are using Odin, you will mess things up even worst.
- Download Odin on your computer, unzip the package and then install the app by following on screen prompts.
- Also download the stock Android OS for your Samsung Galaxy A5 – you can get the file from SamMobile.
- Unzip the update package on desktop.
- Don’t forget to install Galaxy A5 drivers on your PC.
- Turn off your phone and boot download mode on Galaxy A5.
- Also, run Odin on your computer.
- Establish a connection between your devices in the end.
- Then, check Odin as on the program the “added” message must be displayed, while the ID:COM section must be now yellow or blue.
- Good; now from the program you have to select the “PA” option.
- Next, pick the firmware file from desktop and resume the update process by clicking on “start”.
- Wait while stock Android OS is manually flashed on your Samsung Galaxy A5.
- The process will be completed when on Odin the “pass” message will be displayed and when the ID:COM will be turned green.
Well, there you have it; those are the most efficient troubleshoot methods that you can apply for unbricking your software bricked Samsung Galaxy A5. Try the steps from above and note down the results. In the end, return here and share your impressions with us and with other users that might need your help. Also, stay close as we will update this tutorial with new troubleshoot solutions as soon as something new is being discovered.
